Amid ongoing protests between farmers and the government, security forces tightened restrictions in Mohali and Kharar today. Police erected barricades at several locations to prevent the movement of protesting farmers. Reports suggest that several leaders and workers of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal) were detained in Mohali and Kharar.

At the Bhago Majra toll plaza on the Ludhiana-Kharar highway, police conducted strict vehicle checks, stopping buses, cars, and motorcycles to identify farmers. Any vehicle displaying farmers’ union flags or individuals wearing green scarves or turbans—symbols of the protest—were also detained to prevent their entry into Chandigarh.

To curb the farmers’ movement, all entry points between Mohali and Chandigarh were sealed. Heavy police deployment was seen at crucial locations such as Sector 56, Franco Lights, the Furniture Market, Kajheri Border, YPS Chowk, Phase 10, and Phase 11. Joint security efforts by Mohali and Chandigarh police ensured that no protestors could breach the barricades.\

Farmer leader Parmdeep Singh Baidwan accused the government of using police force to suppress their peaceful struggle. He claimed that several farmers were detained and taken to police stations in Phase 8, Matour, and other areas. Baidwan further alleged that he had been placed under house arrest. He criticised the Punjab government, led by the Aam Aadmi Party, for aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s stance and working against farmers’ interests. “We had planned a peaceful protest in Sector 34, but the police are deliberately harassing us and common citizens by blocking roads and detaining protestors,” he said.

The protesting farmers have warned the administration that if the crackdown continues, their movement will intensify in the coming days. They are demanding the immediate release of detained farmers and an end to police harassment.
